Mid Years Engineering Experience Conference (MYEEC): From Slump to Jump!

Building on the existing interest to recruit, retain, and graduate engineering students and the multitude of efforts to enhance, improve, and expand the first-year experience and the capstone experience, the Mid Years Engineering Experience (MYEE) Conference was established to focus between these experiences - solely on those middle years. With improvements mounting on addressing the freshman year, the next large hurdle, especially with respect to retention, is the sophomore year where there can be larger losses than even the freshmen year. This mid-year is often referred to as the Sophomore Slump or the Invisible Year. Following successful retention from the sophomore to the junior year, the emphasis shifts to discipline specific and professional preparation often referred to as the Junior Jump.
Join us in this international conversation on improving engineering student success in these mid years, as we aim to highlight the work that is already being done in the field. In addition, we seek to encourage new research and collaborations and increase the interaction among engineering faculty, staff, and administrators focusing on these key mid years.
This conference, hosted by the Dwight Look College of Engineering at Texas A&M University and Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TEES) invites engineering education scholars to submit proposals for presentations, workshops, or special sessions to be considered for the MYEE Conference. Selected reviewed proposals will be invited to submit extended abstracts for conference publication. We are pleased to share that, again this year, selected authors will be invited to submit full papers for a special issue of the international journal, "Engineering Education Letters", focused on these mid year experiences and educational opportunities.
MYEEC is a unique opportunity that allows attendees and presenters to experience and interact with colleagues from around the world. MYEEC provides opportunities to meet with other engineering educators, discuss ideas, reflect on the topics and issues from the sessions, and chart new directions and collaborations. We hope to create a new community focused on these middle years.
The structure of the Mid Years Engineering Experience Conference (MYEEC) is different because its goal is not just to present individual works but to create a learning and sharing experience for each attendee. MYEEC begins Wednesday evening with a welcome reception. It continues Thursday and Friday with a series of intermingled sessions of keynotes, paper presentations, group interactions, round table discussions, and interactive workshops. The hope is that each attendee will learn something new in these two and a half days. There is a second evening dinner to develop a network of people with common interests.
